Trial Monitor scheduling the initiation visit or teleconference with the site staff and the coordinating investigator of the trial, presenting the non- clinical parts of the initiation, and writing and distributing of. Site Initiation Visit Complete at an Investigator Meeting. The initiation of a site can sometimes occur at an Investigator Meeting (IM) where all the potential investigators are brought together in (a typically quite fancy) hotel or other conference arena to receive group training on the new study. Ensuring the quality of a clinical trial in today's challenging drug development climate hinges on several important elements, perhaps none more crucial than the start-up phase, where much of the groundwork for a product development program is built. Achieving predictability in study start-up has become a critical goal within the clinical research timeline. Until recent years, activities associated with study start-up—which include site identification and feasibility, negotiations of contracts and budgets, planning for patient recruitment, managing/tracking regulatory documents, and drug accountability—were largely executed through numerous and often cumbersome manual processes. This would frequently lead to inefficiencies in study timelines and cost. Today, with the advancement of electronic, real-time document collection and data reporting systems, along with increased efforts by biopharmaceutical companies and their contract research organization (CRO) partners to align these technologies with specialized personnel in areas such as critical path project management (CPM) and resource centralization, strides have been made in streamlining study start-up and reducing trial initiation times. Despite this progress, there remains a strong need for the industry to evolve start-up approaches to the next level. Pursuits in data collection and analysis must now focus on the underlying dimensions unique to an individual country or site being targeted for clinical research. This is particularly important amid the rapid globalization of drug development, where access to the right intelligence during study start-up is critical. Intelligence has evolved to go beyond the typical site-level information. It is now captured at the country level, which allows for better feasibility outcomes. Intelligence also now incorporates the regulatory environment risks; the timelines for site contracting; and budget negotiation, as well as submissions, and even time to schedule critical path visits, such as pre-study and site initiation visits. In addition, site intelligence consists of enrollment capabilities and the site's ability to meet enrollment goals. As data integration of country and site performance improves, so will the selection of the best sites available to complete the project in the shortest timeframe. The increasing integration of investigator databases with companies' already proven processes should aid these efforts. An additional consideration involved in gathering intelligence is understanding and gathering data around the more complex clinical trials and creating relationship models across the therapeutic areas. This will result in a higher level of data integration. Such integration, however, will be difficult to achieve if best practices in study start-up are not adequately implemented. To that end, sponsors and CROs must find innovative ways to operationalize start-up activities through technology. Challenged from get-go While recent studies have reported improved trends, sponsors and CROs continue to experience significant challenges in meeting overall clinical trial timeline demands. ![]() According to Cutting Edge Information, 72% of studies run more than one month behind schedule. Such delays can impact the bottom line, with sponsors standing to lose between $600,000 and $8 million for each day that a trial delays a product's development and launch. 1 Challenges in patient recruitment and retention are considered the major cause of drug development delays, but start-up activities are key factors as well, particularly issues around site contract and budget negotiations and approval. This may be a result of increased costs of clinical trials at the site, a more competitive environment, or the result of financial pressures on sponsors to keep investigator payments low. Clinical Trial Site Initiation Visit PresentationThe Tufts Center for the Study of Drug Development finds that while the majority of clinical trials globally meet their patient enrollment goals, sponsors and CROs typically need to nearly double their original timelines to reach those targets. Nevertheless, Tufts reports that 89% of clinical studies meet enrollment expectations, with site activation rates reflecting success with study start-up in particular. 2 Historically, the study start-up phase has been viewed as a labor intensive, costly, and time-consuming component of the clinical trial process. Today, sites must perform a number of specific activities related to documents, submissions, contracts, and visit schedules across multiple studies with multiple sponsors. These documents include site feasibility survey forms, protocols, investigator brochures, site contracts, budget worksheets, patient recruitment plans, informed consent forms, and advertising materials. Ensuring that the most recent versions of these documents are used can be challenging if there are multiple versions and amendments. 3 Heavy paper-based processes have long burdened efforts in study start-up. For instance, Form 1572, which each investigator participating in a trial must complete, 4 was identified as the single most redundant paper received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Manually processing each 1572 could result in weeks of elapsed time per investigator. Devoting resources to the manual routing and tracking of these forms also frequently requires the use of valuable resources that could be allocated to other more critical tasks. Several inefficiencies and limitations continue to threaten the data-collection process during study start-up. For many global trials, there is little standardization for what data is collected, and there are typically multiple places where the information is stored. There is significant need for sites to be able to provide and update their information to a single source rather than multiple sponsor and CRO databases, all with differing criteria.
![]() Drill 1/4 inch to 1/2 inch into the tread / floor. (Use your best judgement as you should know the material you are installing into.) Step 5 – Cutting Iron Balusters to Size. Measure and cut your balusters 3/4″ longer than the distance from the bottom of the handrail to the top of the base (tread/floor). Apr 17, 2015 Like Chris said, pull the carpet back and put the balusters in and wrap the padding and carpet around it. If you go over the carpet, balusters will crush the carpet and it will look like s^*t. Once the wood balusters are removed, measure the distance between the bottom nosing and the underside of the handrail, then add 1-1/2 inches to length. Cut just one baluster, then shoe-horn the baluster into place. If the holes and depth are good – continue cutting. Cut all iron for the Balcony area and install with the Base Shoe. How To Install Iron BalusterRON HAZELTON: Well, what a beautiful day for traveling. I'm headed to St. Paul, Minnesota to visit Steve and Stacy Hect. When they're not busy filling out adoption papers, Steve and Stacy are preparing a youngster's bedroom and childproofing their house for the baby girl they will soon adopt from China. One area of special concern is the railing around the second story stairwell. The wide space between the balusters is a hazard. So today, I'm here to help Stacy and Steve fix that problem in a very attractive way. And your concerns are what, with the existing balusters? [BOTH SPEAK AT ONCE] STEVE HECT: Well, a couple things. First, we can't really gate the end of the stairwell off, and second, we're really concerned about the width of the — of the rails. RON HAZELTON: Right, right, right. Yeah, they're wide enough for a child to crawl completely through. Custom Iron Balusters For StairsAnd then some children as they get a little older, they can get their — squeeze their body through here, but then they fall and they can catch their neck. So we definitely — when we put the new one in, are going to change the spacing on that. Our first step is to remove the old railing. It's attached to the floor with lag screws and to the wall the same way. ![]() [BOTH SPEAK AT ONCE] STACY HECT: — I got it. RON HAZELTON: Good, okay — okay, Steve, let's just set this back here out of the way for now. Well, I've laid out all the components for our railing system right here. There are really only three. This is a system by American Legacy, and the three major components are a newel post, a series of balusters in between the newel posts to go at the top of the stairs and at the corner, a series of balusters in between and the whole thing is connected together with a railing. Now you notice that the newel post and the railing are in oak, 'cause you guys have got a lot of oak in the house and I thought that would be nice. STACY HECT: Right. RON HAZELTON: But the balusters right here are actually in poplar, and these are designed to be painted. [MUSIC] As Steve and Stacy clean the dust off each piece with tack cloths, I temporarily nail the balusters to a strip of lumber so that we can turn our painting into an assembly line operation. As the couple gets started on the balusters, I begin staining and finishing the oak railing. All right, Stacy, you want to grab that newel post there and we're going to get this ready to attach to the floor. These are just plastic food storage bags. I'm sort of putting 'em in here to keep from doing any damage to that new finish we put on here. There you go. That's the bottom end right there. We'll just tighten this up a tad. Now the system that we're going to use to attach these guys, involves the use of this metal plate. We're going to attach the plate to the bottom of the post, and you see how it overhangs here and here? STACY HECT: Yes. RON HAZELTON: And then we're going to attach these ears to the floor. To attach the plate, we have to drill a pilot hole dead center in the bottom of the newel post. How To Install Iron Balusters On Carpet Stairs RailsA special center finder attachment on my combination square, makes locating the center as simple as drawing two diagonal lines. STEVE HECT: Nice work. RON HAZELTON: Next step is, we'll be attaching this plate right here. Now this can be just a little bit tricky but I can show you a couple things that will make it go easier. [MUSIC] You know, driving a large screw like this into hard wood like this oak, can be kind of tough going, but here are a couple of tips that will make it easier. First of all, be sure you choose the right driver tip for your drill. Did you know that there are three different size Phillip bits? A number one for very small screws like this, a number two for medium-sized screws and a number three for large screws like the one we're about to drive in. You can always tell the number three bit because it's got sort of a blunt end right here. Secondly, try lubricating the screws either with soap or wax. In this case, the threads run the full length of the screws. So we're going to wax them all the way from one end down to the other. Now that we've got the right bit for the right screw and we've got our threads lubricated, this should be fairly easy going. Now I want to make sure that this is square with the edge of the stairwell, so I'm going to take a carpenter's square and slip it in here. I align one edge of the square with the edge of the stairwell while Stacy adjusts the post. I've outfitted the drill with a flexible shaft that will allow us to get close enough to the post to bore pilot holes into the floor. Steve then drives in a couple of screws that temporarily hold the post in place. In a little while, we're going to remove the newel post, then reinstall it with the railings attached. Now this is called a rosette. We're going to mount this on the wall and the handrail's actually going to terminate in the center of this. To figure out where that should go, I took a level and I transferred this rectangular shape right here over to this wall, found the center of that and then used the center of that to draw this circle. Now it's time to actually attach this rosette and we're going to do this with a toggle bolt. So first of all, let me put this in position. Now this is the bolt from the toggle bolt. I'm going to put that in the hole just like that, then I'm going to give it a little tap with the hammer. [HAMMERS] Okay. ![]() ![]() Give myself a reference mark right there. And then I'm going to bore out a hole — in this case, large enough so that the toggle can slip through. Next, I insert the bolt through the rosette and screw on the toggle. Then I pinch it closed and push it through the hole. The toggle will flip open inside the wall. As I tighten the bolt, I pull the rosette away so the toggle will come into contact with the back side of the wall. This will prevent it from spinning. Our railings need to be cut to length, so Steve and Stacy begin taking measurements. STACY HECT: About 35 and a half. RON HAZELTON: Thirty five and a half. Okay, now come down and measure from that newel post to this one here. Sonic the Hedgehog 3, often called Sonic 3, is a platform game developed by Sega and is following Sonic 1 and Sonic 2. The game was developed by Sonic Team and published by Sega, being released in 1994, two years after the second game. Is there a black hole in the retro-scene concerning the SEGA Genesis? This has been on my mind for quite some time now, and i can't help but notice how much the Mega Drive/Genesis has been dwindling. The Mortal Kombat game that everyone remembers (and not in a good way) is Mortal Kombat 3 (the third rendition of said release without the word Ultimate in the name). First off, Mortal Kombat 3 wasn’t heavily influenced by Oriental themes as its predecessors were. Sonic 1,2,3 and Knuckles, and maybe Sonic 3D if I'm feeling generous, it's not as bad as people make out, just not great. - Streets of Rage 1+2. 3 kinda sucked IMHO. - Castlevania Bloodlines. Is there a black hole in the retro-scene concerning the SEGA Genesis? This has been on my mind for quite some time now, and i can't help but notice how much the Mega Drive/Genesis has been dwindling. I know that a lot of this has got to do with the fact that SEGA has not released a console in over a decade and their reputation has been in the gutter, but the utterly complete lack of knowledge concerning the system's library is baffling to me. I think that this is also, in part, due to the now famous 'Sonic's Ultimate Collection'. People often recommend that over actually collecting for the system, and that is a huge problem. The problem with that collection is that it's pretty awful in content. It's missing most of the actually great games on the Mega Drive, and they put a lot of games that were never good to begin with (like Super Thunder Blade, a laughably bad port of an arcade game, Altered Beast, Golden Axe - which just pail in comparison to the arcade version, and so on). For example, here's a list of truly brilliant games off the top of my head - Rocket Knight Adventures, MUSHA, Mega Turrican, Contra: Hard Corps, Castlevania Bloodlines, Gley Lancer, Gaiares, Alien Soldier, Thunder Force III & IV, Battle Mania Daiginjou, Gunstar Heroes, Alisia Dragoon, Shinning Force II, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Shinobi III: Return of the Ninja Master, Elemental Master, Dynamite Headdy. Out of the 18 brilliant games in my list, 4 of them are on the collection. That's like coming up with a SNES collection, slaping Mario and Zelda, filling the rest with mediocre games like Knights of the Round, the painfully aged Star Fox, and not putting in any of the JRPGs, or Kirby games, or Mega Man X games, or Donkey Kong. And then there are people that go on about how the library 'hasn't aged well' and never go into detail regarding that. I'm gonna go on a limb here and assume they tried a few of the popular, but mediocre games like Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Vectorman, Ecco etc. The stuff that's on the Ultimate Collection. It's because all of us that actually know anything about the Genesis are over, or are getting close to 30 now. All of what these 90's babies know of the Genesis is what AVGN tells them (his comparison video against the SNES was a joke btw), or they think Sonic '06 is indicative of what SEGA has always been about. So many people also don't seem to know anything of SEGA's mascots beyond Sonic, let alone know of all the amazing third party exclusives that they've had on their systems. There are dedicated SEGA sites though like SEGA-16, and thankfully, there's at least one huge Genesis fanboy with a voice on youtube, Mark Bussler from Classic Game Room. If people want to undervalue the Genesis, that's fine. As long as there's a cloud of ignorance, it at least makes it easy to collect games for it. And thankfully, there's at least one huge Genesis fanboy with a voice on youtube, Mark Bussler from Classic Game Room. If people want to undervalue the Genesis, that's fine. As long as there's a cloud of ignorance, it at least makes it easy to collect games for it. Literally the only reviewer I will give the time of day. I wish there was a bit more ignorance tho and no one knew of alien soldier so I can get rid of my reprod cart and get a megadrive copy for under $200. Yeah, I'm in the same position with Alien Soldier too, lol. Games that didn't receive a NA release can be pretty pricy, but overall it's not too bad compared to the dumb prices associated with the SNES, or even the Saturn, for example. The sad thing is people equate Sega primarily with Sonic these days and if Sonic games aren't doing well than that reflects Sega as a whole and for all the nostalgic gamers who talk about all the great NES and SNES games, I rarely hear anyone reflect on the Genesis despite a lot of people having it growing up, yet a lot of my friends who had a Genesis seem to have most of the same titles. Sonic 1, Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion, Mortal Kombat (for the blood) and usually a variety of sports games and I think the big problem is, outside of Sonic, Sega hasn't made a lot of really good attempts to bring these old franchises into the next gen especially during a time when so many old games were getting either retro remakes for download or a next gen reboot. Looking back Sega did try a Toejam and Earl 3D game on the original Xbox but it was forgotten. And of course there was the disasterous Goldenaxe Beastrider which boggles the mind of how Sega screwed that one up. I think I also heard somewhere that a lot of the classics of the Genesis, while exclusive to the system, weren't true first party Sega games and that Sega didn't retain the rights to a lot of the characters of that era like Nintendo did. ![]() A lot of fans were upset that Toejam and Earl were absent from both Sega All Stars Racing games and it was due to the fact the original creator retained the rights to them and wouldn't let them be used. As well as when it came to the various compliations, there were certain games they couldn't get the rights to. Now the reason I think Sonic 3 and Knuckles was left out was because there was already the Sonic Mega Collection (GC/PS2), plus it could be downloaded on the various services and maybe Sega thought having all the Sonics on that was reduntant. It also doesn't help that when Sega makes one of their 'All Star' collaboration games like the racing ones, they focus more on Dreamcast era characters then Genesis or Saturn era characters. Racing Transformed was little better with reps from Shinobi, Ristar, Afterburner and so on. It is amazing though, despite having a lot of good games and being the slightly better selling, the lack of knowledge of the Sega Genesis library is mind boggling. Seems like all anyone remembers were Sonic and Mortal Kombat's bloody finishing moves. It also doesn't help that it seems with every bad Sonic game or an Aliens Colonial Marines devoted Sega fans continue to dwindle manly because they have less and less to get behind. Well, there certainly isn't a black hole if you're actually collecting on the system. ![]() The Genesis is one of the most affordable retro systems to collect for right now. And I'm sure that's going to change as the NES well dries up. ![]() I thought Sega's Ultimate Collection was a great compilation. I played most of those games on their heyday and have many fond memories. Yes, the Genesis versions of Golden Axe and Thunder Blade were inferior, but it's what we had and played. Also it's a Genesis collection. I would LOVE a classic Sega arcade compilation of their 16 and 32 bit games. Also, the games on the compilation were developed/published by Sega, which is why games like Gaiares and Thunder Force were not there. I wish they'd make a second compilation. ![]() And yea man, back off Knights of the Round and Star Fox:). So if you lost your itunes library, computer crashed, got a new pc, etc.don't worry. The first class is a mill-made stair, which is usually fabricated in a mill shop and shipped to the job site as a kit, ready for assembly and installation. The single most influential element that affects the final cost to install carpeting is the price of the carpet itself. The range of options is vast, spanning from basic olefin and polyester, priced around $1-$2 per square foot, all the way to wool and patterned Berber, which can cost upwards of $9-$11 per square foot. If you are looking to replace the carpet on your stairs with the look and feel of wood, laminate flooring can be an affordable option. When you remove the carpet to find either damaged treads or contractor-grade stairs that were always intended to be covered, laminate can, in fact, be an ideal choice for creating the look you want. Laminate is typically less expensive than hardwood and durable enough to be installed in high traffic areas such as stairs. Installing laminate on stairs requires more precise cuts than in other areas. However, with the right tools and techniques, a do-it-yourselfer can achieve beautiful results. When it comes to installing carpet in your home, some people may think opting for a do-it-yourself installation is a great way to save money. Alternatively, you can make the cut with a jigsaw. In the middle of the tread, make a cut with a handsaw perpendicular to the circular saw cut. Break the nosing off in two pieces by prying them off with a pry bar. Remove any remaining material at the ends of the treads with a chisel. 6 Cut a piece of laminate flooring for each tread. Measure each tread separately, as stairs are often slightly out of square and even very small gaps will be visible in the finished product. Lay a piece of scrap flooring flush against the stringer. If it is out of square, scribe the angle onto the scrap with a pencil. Set your miter saw to that angle to make the end cuts. Account for the width riser and the stair nosing that you will install at the front of each tread when taking measurements and making cuts. Mark each piece as to which tread it fits. ![]() Tips • Use a stair measuring tool for quick, precise measurements of the stair treads and risers. Professionals use these simple tools to find the length of each piece, as well as any out-of-square ends. • When removing carpet, consider how you will make transitions to the flooring above and below the stairs. If the adjacent surfaces will be carpeted, you will need metal nosing at the top and tack strip at the bottom. • After the carpet has been removed, you have the opportunity to reduce any squeaks that the stairs make. Drive a screw into any loose treads or risers. |
